My brother, sisters and I went to spend our holiday in Bali. Each of us should ride the car at least three hours. It was the last week of December 2008. We Left Solo on Saturday afternoon. We also didn’t forget to bring our camera. On Sunday morning we arrived in Gillimanuk. We dropped for one day at my uncle’s house. They had prepared breakfast when we arrived at his house. We had rice and “ayam betutu”; really it was very hot but delicious.

On Monday we went to Denpasar Firstly we visited “Sanur” Beach. As it was still early in the morning we could see the sunrise. We also prayed some moment on the sand then we looked for a hotel because we have no relative who stayed there.

On that day we also visited “Kuta” Beach, Garuda Wisnu Kencana” and also “Sukawati” Market. We had our lunch on the way when we felt hungry. At night we also enjoyed “Barong” Dance. Something that we never forgot was taking pictures at any tourist resort.

One the last day we visited “Sangeh”. Where we could see many monkey. Many of them are still wild and they sometimes bite visitor, from here we went straight to “Bedugul” lake, we went around it by a small boat to see some temples at the other side. Unfortunately, it was raining so hard that we all so wet. We changed our clothes there because we could also buy clothes at the shop near the lake. Really it was so wonderful that I promise I want to visit Bali again next time.

Kebo Iwa

Once upon a time in Bali, lived a wealthy man and his wife. They have been married for a long time but did not have any children. They prayed to God to give them a child. They prayed and prayed God finally answered their pray. The wife got pregnant and they had a baby boy. They were very happy. The baby was extraordinary. He was very much different from other babies. He ate and drank a lot. Day after day he ate more and more. His body was getting bigger and bigger. And by the time he was teenager, his body was a big as a buffalo. That’s why people call him Kebo Iwa, it means Uncle buffalo. Because of his eating habit, Kebo Iwa’s parents spent a lot of money to buy his food. They finally went bankrupt. They had no other choice but to ask the villagers to help them provide the food.

The villagers then worked together to cook and build a big house for Kebo Iwa. He was like a giant. He could not stay in his parents’ house anymore because of his big body. After a few months, the villagers also couldn’t afford to cook him the food anymore. They then asked Kebo Iwa to cook his own food. The villagers just prepared the raw materials. Kebo Iwa agreed and as an expression of his gratitude to the villagers, he help built a dum, dug wells, and he also protected the villagers from animals and people who wanted to attack their village. It was easy task for him since he also had incredible strength.

Meanwhile, the kingdom of Majapahit was planning to attack Bali. They knew about Kebo Iwa. And they also knew that they could not conquer Bali with Kebo Iwa there. Kebo Iwa was more powerful than they were. The Maha Patih of Majapahit then planned something. They were pretending to invite Kebo Iwa to Majapahit to help them dig some wells. They said that Majapahit was suffering from a long dry season and needed water. Kebo Iwa did not know the plan, so he went to Majapahit to help them. When Kebo Iwa was busy digging a well, the Majapahit troops covered the well. Kebo Iwa had difficulty in breathing and buried alive. He died inside the well. After the death of Kebo Iwa, Bali was conquered by Majapahit. Until now, people still remember Kebo Iwa because he had done a lot for Bali.

After working for several hours under the hot sun, the famer returned home at mid-day to take his meal. Mr. Blackie bathed in his water-hole. Mr. Blackie did not work in the afternoon. The famer allowed him to eat grass. At night, Mr. Blackie self comfortably in a small stable next to the farmer’s house, with a roof over his head. Mr. Blackie, however ran away to eat grass, while the farmer was not looking. One day, Mr. Blackie trod on the tail of a quail which was sitting quietly in its nest in the grass. The quail jumped several feel into the air.
“Cheh! Why can’t you be more careful? You trod on my tail.”
“I don’t care,” replied Mr. Blackie. “You shouldn’t make your nest in my grass.”

Soon the quail and Mr. Blackie were quarrelling and shouting at each other.
“This is my field,” said the quail.
“But the grass in it belongs to me,” answered Mr. Blackie.

The quail kicked Mr. Blackie in the mouth so hard that all his top teeth fell out. (That is why buffaloes never have top teeth to this day)

The quail then flew away. But it could not fly very well because its tail had been pulled off by Mr. Blackie. (That is why quails do not have tails)
Not long afterwards, Mr. Blackie was resting under a tree after a hard morning’s work. It was mid-day and the farmer had gone home. Suddenly, a wild ox appeared.
Mr. Ox was Mr. Blackie’s old friend. He had run away from his owner.
“Why do you work so hard? Why don’t you run away with me? We shall be able to eat grass and play together all day. You won’t have to plough rice fields for that silly old farmer.”
“Where can we go?” asked Mr. Blackie.
“Oh, don’t worry about that,” answered Mr Ox, “I know a secret place in the forest where no one can find us.”

They both ran off together, uphill, downhill, and across stream until they reached a green field hidden deep in the forest.

The farmer looked for Mr. Blackie everywhere. At last, he saw some hoof marks left by him. He followed them into the forest. After walking a long way, he saw Mr. Blackie with his friend Mr. Ox eating grass in a field. Mr. Blackie did not know the farmer was there. The farmer tied a rope with a noose on it across a path leading from the field and went home. When he turned later in the day, he saw that Mr. Blackie had been caught in the noose. Mr. Ox ran away as soon as he saw the farmer coming. (That is why there are still wild oxen in the jungle)

The farmer was very angry with Mr. Blackie, “Is this the way repay my kindness?” he cried. “I’ll tie you up with rope through you’re your nose so that you won’t be able to run away in future.” (That is why buffaloes have a hole through their noses)

He had no more trouble with Mr. Blackie after that. Every morning, he rode on Mr. Blackie’s back to his rice fields. In the afternoon, he tied Mr. Blackie by a rope through his nose to a post in his stable.
